Samsung announces processors for photo frames
The move to support digital photo frames appears set to cross a critical mass, with Samsung introducing a line of processors specially designed for digital photo frames. Indeed, Samsung--the maker of anything and everything ranging from NAND flash modules to fuel cells--intends to showcase the S5L2010 series chips at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) next month in Las Vegas. Based on an ARM9 core, the chip supports a bewildering array of multimedia audio and video formats, as can be expected.
The usual suspects supported by the system-on-a-chip support format, range from video such as MPEG-1/2/4, Xvid, Motion JPEG, to audio such as MP3, WMA, OGG and AAC. Other features include support for touch-screen control, booting from a flash device, as well as audio and TV output. Global shipments of digital photo frames are expected to increase by up to 58.8 percent from last year, or 22.7 million. In the final analysis, this is relatively good progress given that they were only introduced as recently as 2005.
