Mobile carriers in India now have the ability to intercept non-corporate email and instant messages sent by BlackBerry smartphone users, says Research In Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM). This will be on a case-by-case basis due to a legal process initiated by the government. However, the company maintains that access to its corporate Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) is not possible, as it does not have access to the decryption key in that scenario.

In related news, RIM has unveiled a revamped architecture for its BES that allows for cloud-based deployments. The company declined to reveal specifics, but it is understood that a single BES deployed in such a manner will eventually be able to support multiple corporations. Will such a cloud-based setup finally allow RIM to take a hands-off approach on the current legal quagmire caused by governments wanting to examine private exchanges between its citizens? The new version of BES will be launched by the end of 2011, so we'll have to wait and see.
