Researchers were able to eavesdrop on wired keyboards from afar by using an antenna to detect the slight electromagnetic radiation emitted when a key is pressed. Researchers Sylvain Pasini and Martin Vuagnoux, both doctorate students with the Security and Cryptography Laboratory at Switzerland's Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, believe this is the first experiment showing the feasibility of such spying.

The research team's website contains videos of two experiments; the second video shows how a large antenna can detect keystrokes through an office wall. The duo tested 11 wired keyboards, all of which proved vulnerable. What's more, Pasini and Vuagnoux claim keystrokes can be monitored as far as 20 meters away. A paper detailing the technique is currently under peer review.
