Researchers claim breakthrough in nanotechnology
Two teams of U.S. researchers are making significant inroads in the field of nanotechnology, which could have a big impact in the development of future microprocessors and storage devices.
By using two ceramic crystal materials--lanthanum aluminate and strontium titanate--one of the teams is working on developing nanotech transistors a mere fraction of the size of those used in existing processors. The other team is working on creating sheets of semiconductor films 15 times denser than anything achieved to date for the storing data. A surface area "the size of a coin" could potentially store data from a staggering 250 DVDs.
