Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) this week demonstrated a new feature called Rapid Start Technology that allows laptops to start up in as little as five seconds from hibernation mode. This is achieved using a dedicated flash drive onto which the various application states are written. Unlike the "instant-on" capability touted by Apple, hibernation mode does not require any power to maintain the content of the system RAM, which opens the door for users to swap out their depleted batteries for fresh ones.

Intel also demonstrated Smart Connect Technology, which according to PCWorld lets a PC "periodically wake up" in order to check for e-mail and other information like Twitter posts--before returning to standby mode. This feature should help busy executives save time when they return from breaks. Intel says both Rapid Start and Smart Connect will be incorporated into the currently-shipping Sandy Bridge by the end of the year. In addition, it's understood that the company's upcoming Cedar Trail microprocessor, designed for netbooks, will also come with the features.

These technologies, in tandem with an aggressive plan to evolve the Atom platform, are part of the chip company's master plan to realize its concept of thin and affordable Ultrabook laptops that meld the best features of laptops and tablets.
