R.I.P. Mac OS 9 Classic
Though you may not have realized it, Apple has retained legacy support for Mac OS 9 "Classic" applications in every version of OS X, through the use of a virtual machine. Sure, the Classic apps never ran on Intel machines but Apple maintained support for them through OS 10.4 Tiger. All good things must eventually come to an end, however and Apple has officially announced that Leopard, which goes on sale today, does not support Legacy OS 9 applications. Honestly, this announcement will only affect a handful of folks--just about every OS 9 app or an equivalent has been ported to OS X at this point and many of the folks who upgrade to Leopard will probably do so on Intel-based machines anyway. Still, you can't help but feel a little wistful, if only for sentimental reasons. Got a particularly heartwarming memory of Mac Classic? Hit us up in the comments.
