The bottom line up top: 64 bits is faster than 32 bits. But that hardly means the current offerings in 64-bit servers and workstations are right for your business. If you do take the leap, there are four main chip choices: AMD, IBM, Intel, and Sun. There's also the choice of true 64-bit processors versus 32-bit "extended" processors; hardware features and security; application support; and, of course, price.
