Portable PC sales up, while desktop sales are flat, says IDC

Overall PC shipments around the world grew in the third quarter this year, says IDC. This is certainly good news given the three quarters of slumping sales due to the poor economy. Interestingly, this happened despite consumer desktops continuing their downward spiral--from 144.9 million units sold in 2008 to a projected figure of just 126.2 million units for 2009.

IDC says that the improved figures for Q3 are spurred by the number of netbooks sold, which grew by 33.5 percent from the same period a year earlier. Moving ahead, desktops shipments are expected to be flat while sales of laptops and netbook are expected to increase. Summing up the upward trend, Loren Loverde, a program director with IDC said, "Once again, the PC market shows its resiliency."
