The QNX operating system (OS) that will power RIM's (NASDAQ: RIMM) new PlayBook tablet could eventually make its way into BlackBerry smartphones. Alan Brenner, senior vice president for the BlackBerry Platform, said in an interview with Bloomberg, that such a move might make sense, and that "there's no reason to rule it out." Another report carried by IntoMobile.com quoted an unnamed RIM vice president as saying that QNX will eventually replace the current BlackBerry OS.

The RIM PlayBook tablet was unveiled earlier this week, and the QNX OS it runs on is designed from the ground up for the tablet computer. Arguably, the new OS will allow RIM to do away with the increasing constraints imposed by the legacy BlackBerry OS even as competitors are quickly transitioning to ever faster hardware.
