Oracle, boosted by Linux, stays atop database market
Top research firms Gartner and IDC each released new database market reports yesterday. Based on revenues, both companies said Oracle dominates with half the market. The other numbers were similar from both sides: Gartner said enterprise database management systems are a $13.8 billion industry with IBM having the second-largest share at 22 percent and with Microsoft at 15 percent, while IDC called it $14.6 billion industry with IBM at 22 percent and Microsoft at 17 percent. Gartner said the market's growing at 8.3 percent per year and IDC said it's 9.4 percent.
