OpenSolaris OS for mainframe released
IBM and Sun have announced a version of the OpenSolaris operating system for mainframes. As an advocate of open-source development, Sun is now calling on open-source developers to participate in the project, in order to improve the prototype. Sine Nomine Associates, the research and engineering firm who designed the port--with financial and technical support from IBM and Sun--is currently developing a Java software port for the mainframe. The Java software is expected to be available late next year or early 2010. There has been increased interest in IBM's mainframes in recent years, and it is easy to see why IBM would be keen to ride on it. OpenSolaris runs as a virtual image within the mainframe's z/VM hypervisor technology.
