OpenOffice 3.1 comes with better performance

A new version of the OpenOffice.org office productivity suite has been released. OpenOffice 3.1 comes with a host of performance improvements and feature enhancements. If you are a heavy spreadsheet user, you will be glad to know of the dramatic improvements that the developers made to the Calc application. As an example, a recalculation that used to take 14 seconds on an earlier version of Calc now completes in only 1 second.

In some ways, many of the new enhancements really only bring it on par with existing features in Microsoft Office. However, there is no denying that the new tweaks such as the formula tool tips and prettier anti-aliased graphics and charts make it a much better contender, especially considering that OpenOffice is free. Overall, I think existing users will not hesitate before upgrading, and even new comers will be pleasantly surprised by the improved usability in OpenOffice 3.1.
