Apple fanatics, ready your pocketbooks. If you're obsessed with Steve Jobs, you'll surely remember the man's post-Apple endeavor, NeXT Software: a company founded in 1985 that aimed to revolutionize the educational computer industry by developing a PC "powerful enough to run wet lab simulations and cheap enough for freshmen to use in their dorm rooms." While it's debatable whether NeXT achieved those aims, the company's success is anything but debatable--the $10,000 NeXT Computer was a monumental failure and the company was acquired by Apple in 1996. Regardless, NeXT's legacy is still felt to this day: popular games like Wolfenstein 3D and Doom were coded on NeXT workstations, not to mention the world's first web browser and web server, which sewed the seeds for the Internet we all know and love. Perhaps most visible, however, is NeXTSTEP's contributions to OS X: the OS's dock, object oriented file browser and XNU microkernel can still be found in the Mac operating system to this day. So, perhaps you can see how a working NeXT workstation might be seen as a living piece of history, especially for Mac fans. Wish you had a NeXT cube in your basement/museum? Well, now's your chance: a complete system (down to the branded power cables, accessories and software) has appeared on eBay and the bidding is currently at a measly $630--a steal, for a machine that once sold for the price of a car.
