Nvidia CEO: Microsoft should release Windows 8 on ARM tablets first
In an interview with AllThingsD, Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) founder and president Jen-Hsun Huang warned Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) not to position Windows 8 on ARM as PCs. Microsoft has said that it will have a version of Windows 8 for the ARM processor. If it were left to him, Huang said that from "a finesse perspective" that he would first come out with Windows 8 on ARM tablets, and also ensure full Office support for the version of Windows. "If Office runs on Windows on ARM--it's the killer app," concluded Huang.
Huang went on to talk about creating customized processors for each category of devices, such as tablets, smartphones or even cars. What is interesting however was his almost immediate concession that it may not be economical to embark on such a task at the moment. In Huang's own words: "In order to build these system-on-chips, we need 500 chip designers and 1,000 software engineers to bring them to market. Two or three years each [to design]."
As the creator of the Tegra 2 processor and the upcoming quad-core Tegra 3, Nvidia is currently one of the main players in the tablet market, shipping in 70 percent of non-iPad tablets. While it is understandable that Nvidia has a vested interest in the success of Windows 8 on ARM, it remains to be seen how Microsoft will play its tablet card in 2012.
