Nortel planning $1.9 billion for R&D

Nortel's CEO Mike Zafirovski, having spent the past 100 days learning about his new company, next week will lay out a $1.9 billion research budget, officials said. The target areas are a hodgepodge of buzzwords like IMS, WiMAX, and IPTV, but plain-old enterprise networking will get it share as well. Meanwhile, Nortel hired George Riedel away from rival Juniper Networks to be its strategy officer.
