Nokia plans to install GPS chips in all handsets
A phone in every pocket and a GPS chip in every phone! That's Nokia's rallying call, apparently: the world's largest handset manufacturer is planning to install GPS chips across its entire line of phones, including its low-cost prepaid models, according to GPS vendor Route 66. No word yet on when this is coming but it could lead to some really exciting features in the enterprise. The good folks at Autodesk showed me some of their location-based services a few months ago and while those were mostly based on cellular technology, they allowed for all sorts of advanced functionality, for example, the tracking of mobile field workers in real time. GPS technology in phones could lead to a whole range of stalking enterprise applications and it's exciting to see a major player like Nokia taking the lead.
