Next-gen wireless spec features multi-gigabit networking
The Wireless Gigabit (WiGig) Alliance has published the initial specification of its ultra-fast wireless technology that can theoretically achieve data rates of up to 7Gbps by tapping into unlicensed spectrum in the 60GHz range. This is more than 10 times faster than speeds offered by 802.11n. Of course, if the current generation of Wi-Fi performance is any indication, the maximum speed is likely to be achievable only within the same room.
Despite its hugely increased data transmission capacity, the new standard is not intended to compete with the widely deployed WiFi. Rather, the new specification was designed with the intention of replacing cables for uses such as delivering high-definition video streams or between laptops and their docking stations.
What makes the new specification even more attractive is its tri-band compatibility with current-generation of Wi-Fi devices, which operates in the 2.4GHz and 5GHz spectrum. Indeed, both the WiGig Alliance and Wi-Fi Alliance have announced that they will be cooperating on multi-gigabit wireless schemes.
Boasting its credibility with the WiGig Alliance are the members backing it, which include big names such as Intel, Broadcom and Atheros Communications. Cisco also joined its Board of Directors earlier this week.
Ali Sadri, president and chairman of the WiGig Alliance outlined the road ahead in a statement: "With this announcement today, and with our new partnership with the WiFi Alliance, we are one step closer to fulfilling our vision of a unified 60 GHz ecosystem. We welcome all companies to join with us as we continue to drive the industry forward."
