New Sun servers, but same old chips

Sun Microsystems will soon ship three new servers--the Sun Fire V215, V245 and V445--but they'll be using the older UltraSparc IIIi processor, not the new UltraSparc IIIi+ design, officials said. The new processor was supposed to ship late in 2005 but was delayed by manufacturing glitches. Still, the new servers are better than their predecessors (the V210, V240 and V440), with a focus on faster input-output due to the PCI Express interface. Sun did not announce exact shipment dates or any pricing information, but the delays don't bode well for a company trying to execute a turn-around.
