New environmentally friendly LCD monitor knows when to go to sleep
Monitor-maker Eizo Nanao has announced a new "EcoView Sense" feature that will debut in their just announced FlexScan range of monitors. As the name suggests, EcoView Sense is positioned to be more environmentally friendly by using motion detectors to sense for motion. The absence of motion within the span of 40 seconds will cause the monitor to go into sleep mode, thereby saving electricity. Any movement within 120cm in front of it--presumably caused by you returning to your desk, or waking up from your nap--will cause it to wake up.
That's not all, other energy-saving features include an ambient light sensor that adjusts the display's brightness according to the amount of light in the room. This feature is not new--indeed, they are commonly used in BlackBerry Smartphones as well as Sony's recent TT range of laptops. However, I believe that this is the first time I have seen it incorporated into a desktop display. Finally, each FlexScan monitor also includes a power switch that allows users to completely turn off the power.
