New crop of SSDs from OCZ, SanDisk push capacity, speed limits
Not satisfied with the blistering speed of existing solid-state drives (SSD), manufacturers at Computex 2010 in Taipei this week took the opportunity to showcase new SSD products. SanDisk unveiled its P4 and G4 SSD offerings, which are aimed at tablets and high-performance laptops or desktops respectively. The P4 comes in capacities of between 8GB to 128GB, while the G4 ranges from 64 GB to 256GB. In addition, the P4 is unique in that it uses nonvolatile NAND flash memory as a cache.
OCZ announced its RevoDrive, an SSD based on a PCI-Express interface capable of performing reads at 540MB/sec and writes at 530 MB/sec. By relying on the much faster PCIe bus and two Sandforce controllers in RAID configuration, OCZ was able to literally double the performance of its product and achieve twice the performance of consumer SSD offerings. OCZ also showcased 1.8-inch versions of the company's conventional Vertex 2 and Onyx SATA II SSDs for use in ultra-thin laptops or tablets devices.
