New API launched for Facebook platform

Social networking service Facebook has seen many unorthodox usages, ranging from Facebook ‘pokes' being used for court notification, and even of teenagers using it for sex extortion. To help encourage even greater usage, Facebook has announced new APIs related to accessing and updating of Facebook status, notes, links and video. In addition, the company has announced that it would join the board of the OpenID Foundation to promote this open framework.

Despite its lack of a working revenue model, the site has continued to grow apace. Underscoring the popularity of the site, Facebook engineer Chris Putnam wrote in the company's official blog for developers, "We've seen increasing engagement with over 15 million users updating their status each day and sharing over 24 million links per month."  He added, "We wanted to make sure this content and the ability to share this content was available through our standard APIs."
