Nevada bill could outlaw RFID security research

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) on Friday cautioned that a proposed bill being put up in the Nevada State Legislature could make it unlawful to perform legitimate research on the security aspects of RFID. According to the bill, S.B. 125, it will be a felony to so much as "possess, read, or capture" another person's personal identifying information on RFID. Offenders could be put in prison for up to five years, and fined $10,000.

Lee Tien, a senior staff attorney at EFF noted that a recently enacted anti-skimming law in California contains a safe harbor provision for security researchers. On the other hand, Neveda's bill--in its current form at least, does nothing to protect information security research.
