Moving to exploit SSD in the enterprise
Solid State Disks have become a stable technology that is swiftly moving toward maturity. Certainly, I believe that it is set for widespread deployment in enterprises and the data center once prices fall adequately. Indeed, I was blown away by the quantum leap in performance after installing a high performance Samsung SSD on my laptop a month ago. As such, I can certainly agree with InformationWeek's George Crump when he asserted that, "[SSD] solves performance and power issues that mechanical drives cannot."
Crump argues that in many environments, SSDs are actually cost justifiable "right now," and suggests that enterprises of all sizes should start deploying this technology. This can be done directly on servers, or used to expand the capabilities of an existing SAN. Do you have any experiences with SSDs in the enterprise that you would care to share?
