Motorola buys Symbol Technologies

Motorola, the telephone giant, is buying industrial handhelds maker Symbol Technologies for $3.9 billion. Symbol will remain in its New York headquarters and will become the foundation of Motorola's future expansion into enterprise products, officials explained. While Symbol is best known for its bar code scanners, they also are into networking, RFID technologies and software.
