Monsters of tech team up for green IT initiative
The trend for more energy-efficient enterprises and data centers continues to pick up steam, with more and more organizations expressing interest in green technology every day. Now there's word that some of the biggest names in technology have taken notice. A laundry list of companies that reads like a who's who's of tech--including Intel, AMD, Google, EDS, EMC, Dell, HP, IBM, Lenovo and Microsoft--have assembled in a Voltron-like manner to form the Climate Savers Computing Initiative. Along with partners from outside of the tech world (the EPA, PG&E and World Wildlife Fund), the Initiative hopes to set guidelines for more energy efficient systems and components. For example, the group hopes to make power supplies 90 percent more efficient industry wide. If this goal is achieved, they estimate that greenhouse gas emissions will fall by 54 million tons a year. What's more: businesses will save more than $5.5 billion in the process.
