Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) is making another push to persuade users to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7. As reported by CRN, Tami Reller, Microsoft's corporate vice president, called on the company's partners to keep pushing Windows 7 and assist in moving the more than 300 million desktops to a "modern experience." Reller also highlighted Microsoft's commitment to reducing hardware requirements in Windows 8--so any hardware bought when businesses migrate to Windows 7 can be kept when moving to Windows 8.

According to Computerworld, XP is still being used on some 51% of the PCs around the world. Business use of XP is higher, and was recently pegged at 60% by Forrester Research (NASDAQ: FORR). Those still dragging their feet may want to consider that only 1,000 days of extended support now remains for XP. The official Windows blog gave this friendly reminder: "On April 8, 2014, security patches and hotfixes for all versions of Windows XP will no longer be available."
