Microsoft will release an emergency update today for Internet Explorer that will fix nine vulnerabilities. Also included in the update is an out-of-band release for a zero-day vulnerability that affects IE6 and IE7, as covered in Microsoft Security Advisory 981374. Microsoft says it was monitoring the situation and arrived at the conclusion that "an out-of-band release is needed to protect customers."

Jason Miller, Data and Security Team Manager for Minneapolis-based Shavlik Technologies, noted that Internet Explorer 8 is not affected by the highly publicized vulnerability found in Security Advisory 981374. However, Miller highlighted that the patch is a cumulative update that resolves multiple vulnerabilities, some of which involves IE8. As such, Miller says that administrators should "be sure to patch all versions of Internet Explorer as soon as the bulletin is released.
