Microsoft puts up $250,000 bounty for Conficker Worm
In an attempt to stem the worst Internet worm outbreak on the web for years, Microsoft has posted a $250,000 payout as reward to anyone able to furnish information leading to the arrest and conviction of the creators of Conficker.
Conficker takes advantage of a critical vulnerability in the Windows operating system to infect computer systems around the world, and then attempts to spread the infection with a nefarious bag of tricks. Despite the release of a patch by Microsoft last October, more than 10 million computers have been infected to date. In the past, Microsoft has paid $250,000 to two people who identified the author of the Sasser worm.
