Microsoft this fall will begin shipping Data Protection Manager, a disk-based backup application. DPM is part of System Center, which is Microsoft's umbrella name for most server administration tasks as of the Vista time frame. Anyway, the software is initially targeted at midsized businesses but has enough high-end features that analysts say customers of the major storage companies should consider trying it. Then again, Microsoft isn't about to support backups for non-Windows servers like an EMC or Veritas does.
