Microsoft plans small Patch Tuesday for January
Microsoft has just one security bulletin for the first Patch Tuesday of the New Year. Rated as critical, the problem appears to be a remote code execution vulnerability affecting various versions of Windows, ranging from Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Also affected are the newer Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 operating systems, though the problem is rated as moderate on these platforms.
This is in contrast to the situation in December, where Microsoft released the largest Patch Tuesday update in five years, as well as an out-of-band emergency patch to fix an Internet Explorer bug that was actively being exploited by hackers for financial gain.
