Zero-Day Exploits

If you happened to download a security update from Microsoft for the Mac version of Office on Tuesday, I've got news for you: You've been had! Microsoft is reporting that the security updates were pre-release binaries that were posted in error and is urging anyone who may have installed the updates to promptly uninstall them. "Due to human error, they were accidentally published to the public websites before our full testing release process was complete," said a post on Microsoft's Security Response Center Blog. "As soon as we discovered the error, we moved quickly to address it and remove the pre-release binaries from our public sites." Furthermore, the company told Mac users that the accidentally-released updates did not relate to the two recently-discovered Word zero-day attacks, one of which affects users of Word 2004 and Word X on the Mac.
