Microsoft demonstrates pre-beta release of Windows 7

Microsoft finally showed a full, public demonstration of its next operating system, Windows 7, at the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference this week. According to Microsoft officials, Windows 7 will extend existing innovations made by developers in Windows Vista. There is little news about specific features at this point, though it is known that Windows 7 will feature enhancements in terms of performance, reliability, compatibility and security over Vista. In addition, Windows 7 will be compatible with the same hardware, applications and drivers as Windows Vista. No specific dates were set for its availability, though "three years from the availability of Windows Vista" was mentioned.
