Microsoft building Exchange 14 as a service first
Redmond-based software giant Microsoft is riding a paradigm shift in the way it builds its flagship messaging Microsoft Exchange software. Traditionally, Microsoft has always built its software to run on a server platform first before tweaking it to deliver their inherent functionalities as a service. However, the opposite is true of Exchange 14, which is slated to replace Exchange 2007 when it is completed next year.
One obvious advantage of building Exchange as a service first would be the large base of testers that Microsoft is able to tap into. Indeed, millions of users are already using a hosted version of the service provided by an early build of Exchange 14. This news certainly brings a new light to all the disparaging remarks ever made of the perpetual "beta" status of Google's Gmail service. Then again, Google might just release a Gmail server tomorrow for all you know.
