Microsoft: 10 security bulletins, 34 vulnerabilities for Patch Tuesday
The Patch Tuesday scheduled for the month of June will take place today and see 10 security bulletins. According to Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), they will resolve a total of 34 security vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows and key applications such as Office and Internet Explorer. Seven of the bulletins have a severity rating of "critical"--six affect Windows while the final one is for Internet Explorer. The remaining three bulletins are rated as important and affect Microsoft Office.
Critical flaws are classified as vulnerabilities that have the potential to allow an attacker to take over a targeted machine remotely, without any user intervention or social engineering to speak of. This can be extremely dangerous as the conditions exist for the creation of an Internet worm that is self propagating. As noted by Ars Technica, this crop of security bulletins is a whopper compared with last month's quiet Patch Tuesday. I believe this erratic pace is a reflection of the unexpected places where security flaws could be discovered.
