The market for external disk storage was $3.8 billion in the first quarter of 2005, up 6.7 percent from last year and marking the industry's eighth consecutive quarter of growth. EMC continued to lead with a 21.4 percent revenue share, followed by Hewlett-Packard (17.7 percent), IBM (11.5 percent), Hitachi (9.1 percent), and Dell (7.7 percent). However, IDC analysts noted, the situation is becoming somewhat murky due to various OEM/resale deals, pending acquisitions, and hybrid disk/tape products.
