Metric: Security breaches can prove costly

How do customers react when businesses harm their data? Not well, according to a new study from a New York law firm and a private think tank. They asked 1,000 customers whose data was hacked. About 40 percent said they're considering other vendors, about 20 percent said they already switched away, and about 5 percent said they're taking legal action. Sometimes honesty is the best policy: 12 percent said they respected vendors for being straightforward about hacks.
