McAfee will compensate users for bad antivirus update

After formally apologizing for the update fiasco that brought down thousands of systems last week, beleaguered security vendor McAfee have evidently decided that more needs to be done. In a new announcement, the company says that it will reimburse "reasonable expenses" for home and home office users who had to pay to fix their PCs as a result of its botched antivirus definition update.

McAfee says another announcement detailing the steps needed to process reimbursement requests will be coming "in the next few days." Affected users will also receive a free two-year extension of their current McAfee subscription, which will be credited over the next 30 days.

For now, it remains to be seen how well McAfee will be able to weather the severe beating on its reputation. If anything, this debacle essentially revealed the weakness of push updates. As I elaborated on in the commentary last week, it is not inconceivable for hackers to specifically target the update severs of popular software in order to gain a quick entry into thousands of systems.
