Mass. software switch set to hit Microsoft
There's a new edict in Massachusetts: By the start of 2007, all documents created and saved by the government must use open file formats. That effectively bans Microsoft Office and is a boon to OpenOffice and .pdf supporters. Sensing a dangerous-to-Redmond trend, Microsoft is trying to gets its own formats such as .doc, .xls, and .ppt accepted by standards bodies, but they're not expected to succeed since the formats are not truly open for anyone to use.
