Market share of Windows continues to slide
Use of Microsoft's flagship Windows operating system dipped by 0.3 percent in December 2009, and settled at 92.2 percent as the year drew to a close. This latest dip rounds out eight months of dropping numbers for Windows OS in 2009. This also occurred in spite of impressive gains from the launch of Windows 7. Not surprisingly, both Windows XP and Windows Vista lost share in December, though it is not clear what operating systems users switched to.
The numbers are hardly telling at this point. As pointed out by Computerworld, the current pace of loss over the last 24 months is comparatively minuscule. Even maintaining the same pace of erosion, Windows will continue to be the dominant operating for another 27 years.
However, the dip in market share could explain Microsoft's move to the clouds with Azure, among other initiatives.
