Zero-Day Exploits

Mac users could soon find a powerful ally on their side in the world of security--whether they need him or not. Landon Fuller, a former engineer in Apple's BSD Technology Group and one of the original designers of Darwin, may just offer his services to the OS X community. You'll likely recall that this past month was the Month of Apple Bugs. What you may not know is that it was also the Month of Apple Fixes--Fuller attempted to patch zero-day exploits as they were released on the MoAB site and posted them to his personal website. Now he's thinking of expanding the month of fixes to create a team of security researchers at the ready. "Perhaps [it could be] the Mac OS equivalent to ZERT," Fuller said, in reference to the Zero-day Emergency Response Team, which offers patches for Microsoft products, sometimes months before an official fix is issued. The only question that remains: is there a real need for a Mac ZERT now that the MoAB is over?
