Linux lands huge Brazilian contracts
Continuing its slow march toward the enterprise desktop, Linux added yet another notch to its belt or rather, another 50,000 notches. Three major Brazilian companies--BitWay Computadores, EnabledPeople, and Imtech--have begun deploying Linux PCs in conjunction with the Brazilian government's "Computers for All" program. 50,000 PCs have already been deployed and the companies expect to deploy an additional 10,000 machines per month. The program aims to make computer technology affordable for low income citizens and will expose tens of thousands of Brazilians to open-source software. Needless to say, this is a huge win for Linux and the open-source community as a whole.
