Linux eyes the enterprise desktop
We've been seeing a lot of announcements centering on enterprise Linux lately, including Oracle's announcement that they would enter the distribution and support market. While a lot of this activity certainly centers on Linux as a solution for the data center, there's no denying that Linux is gaining traction in the enterprise as a desktop solution, as well. We've recently seen big announcements from IBM and Sun regarding Linux support, and Red Hat and Novell continue to launch new versions of their distributions with increased security and new desktop management tools. With the advent of Vista, many enterprises will be given the opportunity to re-evaluate their commitment to Windows and a few might choose to jump ship. Linux supporters note that emerging economies like China and India could provide an especially large number of opportunities for large-scale Linux deployments. Does your enterprise already use Linux on the desktop? If so, please let me know.
