Lenovo takes aim at the MacBook Air

The MacBook Air is sleek, shockingly portable and--let's face it--not exactly enterprise material. Sure, it's easily the most exciting ultraportable laptop in years but just try convincing your IT department that a machine that doesn't include a Windows license is worth $1800. However, let's just say that money isn't an issue for your IT department. Sure, you could go with that MacBook Air and simply install Windows on it. Or, you could take a look at another ultraportable laptop that fits inside of a manila envelope: Lenovo's forthcoming ThinkPad X300. Sure, it's not nearly as thin as the MacBook Air. It is, however, roughly the same weight. And check out what that extra .16 inches of thickness buys you: three USB ports (as opposed to one), a higher-rez display, a removable battery, an Ethernet port, a DVD drive and even optional 3G connectivity. What's the catch? The X300 is only available with a 64GB solid-state hard drive and as such, has a base price of almost $1000 more than the MacBook Air. Still, if you're looking for something with a similar form factor but more built-in features, the X300 might just be the ticket.
