Lenovo claims battery life crown for ThinkPad X201
Lenovo says its new ThinkPad X201 ultraportable laptop can run up to 12.2 hours with an optional nine-cell lithium-ion battery, setting a new endurance mark. And using the nine-cell battery won't render the laptop a kludge either--its total weigh tips the scales at a modest 3.1 lbs, according to Lenovo. The battery tests were conducted using MobileMark 2007.
Lenovo credits the improvements to the power managers in its T-series and X-series of ThinkPads. Users who work with their laptop plugged in for long periods of time, for example, will see their laptop adapting to charge the batteries slower. This has the effect of extending battery life.
In addition, the company also offers batteries with slightly lower runtimes, though they're guaranteed to provide the same runtime for three years. Lenovo's senior worldwide product marketing manager Mika Majapuro explained how this works: "We don't give all of the capacity at once to a customer," which allows the battery to remain fresh over a longer period of time.
