Large Patch Tuesday from Microsoft this month

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) is set to issue a total of nine security updates to fix a total of 11 bugs found in Windows and the Office productivity suite today. This is a new high for the Redmond-based company, which typically deliver a few patches, in odd-numbered months. As noted by Network World, this is "more than double the maximum" the company has delivered on such months, though Microsoft has delivered larger number of updates overall.

Four of the bulletins are rated as "critical," with another five ranked as "important." Emil Protalinski over at Ars Technica put together a table listing the affected software for patches labeled as critical and important. The affected software appears to be spread quite evenly around various versions of Windows starting from Windows XP (SP3) to Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008. This does suggest that the affected components are generic in nature and the flaws have probably been around--albeit undetected--for a while already.
