Kingston admits to insecure USB drives

Memory maker Kingston Technologies has admitted that the BlackBox (DTBB), Secure (DTSP) and Elite (DTEP) variants of its DataTraveler family of USB flash drives have security problems that allow their purported security to be defeated.

The Security Update Information put up by the company noted that "It has recently been brought to our attention that a skilled person with the proper tools and physical access to the drives may be able to gain unauthorized access to data contained on the following Kingston Secure USB drives"

Additional information on the nature of the vulnerability is scarce, though Kingston was quick to emphasize that other products in the same DataTraveler family are not affected by this problem. For now, the company has also quietly issued a factory recall on affected drives.
