Kindle for Android 2.0 now comes with newspapers, magazines

Amazon has updated its Android for Kindle e-reader and as promised, rolled out the ability to purchase and read more than 100 newspapers and magazines directly on the software e-reader. Much like what users of the hardware Kindle Wireless Reading Device have been able to do for some time now, the Android tablet and smartphone-toting crowd can now have their newspaper or magazine fix automatically delivered to their devices. No dates were given, but Amazon promised in October to bring Kindle newspapers and magazines to its Kindle Reading Apps.

Not all publications are actually available for Android for Kindle at the moment, though. I did a quick browse, and it appears that while popular titles such as Reader's Digest, Newsweek and The Economist are available, others such as Time are not. Of course, there is already an official app on Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL) App Store that allows users to pay $4.99 per issue of Time, which might explain why its a no-show on the Kindle front. A few reports have noted how this move by Amazon pits it squarely against the iPad; personally, I think it would be more accurate to say that it was Apple's iPad that has put the pressure on Amazon ebook franchise.
