Are you a Windows or OS X user who secretly longs for a little Linux on the side? Are you still too timid to go whole hog and dual-boot Linux on your machine? Well, if that's the case, you'll be glad to hear that the popular KDE open-source desktop environment is making the leap to the Windows and Mac platforms. The KDE development community is currently working hard to create native versions of the core KDE desktop programs, the KOffice suite, and the Amarok music player that can be run on Windows/Mac systems without the need for a full Linux install. And judging by the looks of it, things are coming along quite nicely. Ars Technica took an early Windows version of KDE for a quick spin and found that "Major applications are mostly functional with only minor rendering glitches and a few remaining platform-related bugs." "I'm very impressed with the current progress of the Windows port and what I have seen of the Mac OS X port impresses me too," Ars writes.
