Juniper announces first 100Gbps Ethernet interface card
Juniper Networks has announced the first 100Gbps Ethernet interface card for its T1600 core router. The T1600 router is a high-performance product targeted at telecommunications providers or large cloud-infrastructure providers. There is no mention of cable requirements, but a Cat 7a is probably the minimum requirement here, though Cat 8 is the only practical option since the former is good at 100Gbps, for 15 meters.
Ironically, the technical specifications for 100Gbps Ethernet standard is still being worked on by IEEE's Ethernet task group, as with 40Gbps Ethernet. Final rectification and publication of the standard is not expected for another year yet, leaving 10Gbps as the newest published Ethernet standard. It is not known why Juniper opted to release the product prior to the standard being finalized, nor is it known if Juniper will tag the product with a "draft" designation.
