ISO approves Open Document Format
May 3, 2006 — 7:01pm ET
The Open Document Format is now a standard, after gaining approval this week from the International Standards Organization. The standard is based on the open-source OpenOffice software suite's format and is endorsed by basically everyone except Microsoft. A Microsoft spokesman said they'll support interoperability with ODF documents if and when it becomes popular, but they'll also continue pushing and licensing their own hoped-for standard called Open XML.
